  MMS Scholar's Won 1st Place

Congratulations to the Monrovia A Team for winning 1st place in the 6th through 9th grade division of the 5-State Questions Unlimited Deep South Academic Challenge this past weekend, Saturday, 18 February 2012.

Teams from Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia participated in the contest held this year at Arab High School.

Competition Highlights:

·                     There were 9 teams competing, having to play 6 games in preliminary rounds to determine playoff seeding order for those teams scoring a 6-0, 5-1, and 4-2 win-loss record.

·                     Monrovia played 6 rounds in their pool, with scores as follows:

Ø  Monrovia (200) vs. J. H. Phillips Academy A  (210)

Ø  Monrovia  (350) vs. Hartselle City A  (75)

Ø  Monrovia  (205) vs. Arab A  (240)

Ø  Monrovia (310) vs. Arab B (115)

Ø  Monrovia (400) vs. Hartselle City B  (50)

Ø  Monrovia (300) vs. J. H. Phillips Academy B  (125)

·                     Because we were 4 - 2 after pool play, the team was ranked 4th in the competition, earning a place to compete in the playoffs.   However, we had the highest overall point average of any team at the competition going into the playoffs.  5 teams qualified for the playoffs.  So, the 4th and 5th place teams squared off head-to-head with the winner to face the number 1 team at the competition, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams would face each other.

·                     Quarter Finals (for 5th and 4th place teams only):

Ø  Monrovia (210) vs. Arab B (105)

·                     Semi-Finals:

Ø  Monrovia  (285) vs. Randolph (170)

·                     Finals/Championship Game:

Ø  Monrovia  (345) vs.  J. H. Phillips Academy  A (215)

Ø  Monrovia came back from a 1 win and 2 loss record early in the day to win all other matches for the day.
