Flag and Tag

 

 

 

Objective: TSW learn to self-monitor reading for better comprehension.

 

Procedure:

1.      Hand out individual copies of reading material and sets of cards with Flag and Tag Post It notes.

 

2.       Students use flags to tag relevant points as they read.  Place flags on the text where relevant.

 

 

3.      Flag definitions:

Main Idea - put a flag by a sentence that sums up the reading

Fuzzy – put this flag by anything in the text that you don’t understand

Been There – put this flag by an idea that you have prior knowledge or personal experience with.

STOP – the word or concept stops you in your tracks, need help with this part.

Got It! – put flag by an idea that explains a question you had or that you really understand.

 

To use with sequencing:

Write 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th, 5th, etc. on the flags. Have students read flag an event and tag it according to sequence.

 

4.      Replace Flag and Tag post-it notes to cards. Can be used over and over.
