Read Around the Text Strategy

Objective:
to preview a content-area text in order to better comprehend non-fiction
material.
Procedures:
1.
Display
a poster of the Read Around the Text visual aid.
2.
Ask
students to open book to the chapter that one is preparing to start teaching.
3.
Using
one section at a time, cover each part of the Read Around
the Text circle.
#1 Pictures Cues – describe pictures in the
section
#2 Captions – read a caption
#3 Maps/charts/graphs – describe
#4 Big Ideas – headings of paragraphs
#5 First and last paragraph of section
#6 Questions – read questions at end of section
This
can be done orally through a game setting as well.
