FLUENCY
CHECK REMINDER
Why is fluency important?
q The number of words read correctly per minute is an
indicator of a student’s progress in all aspects of reading – decoding,
fluency, and comprehension.
q Research strongly backs the correlation between achievement
and the number of words per minute.
q When a child is a fluent reader, he/she can spend
their energy on making meaning as opposed to decoding words, thus improving
comprehension.
