FLUENCY CHECK REMINDER

Why is fluency important?

q       The number of words read correctly per minute is an indicator of a student’s progress in all aspects of reading – decoding, fluency, and comprehension.

q       Research strongly backs the correlation between achievement and the number of words per minute.

q       When a child is a fluent reader, he/she can spend their energy on making meaning as opposed to decoding words, thus improving comprehension.

Please note:

Ø     Assess only and all of the students on the current list of struggling readers.

Ø     Assess fluency on grade level material (not a textbook).

Ø     Practice fluency at the student’s reading level.

Ø     Record results on the attached form.
