Comprehension Lesson with Fluency Practice

for the Content Classroom

 

Purpose: provide comprehension and fluency instruction for an

       intervention classroom.

 

Materials: any leveled text such as an EBSCO article, textbook, or 

                 trade book.

 

Introductory

1.    What: Quick write about the topic of the text. 

Why: To introduce the topic of the lesson.

     How: Students write for 2 minutes with single words, phrases, 

              or sentences. Group shares their thoughts.

Developmental

2.    What: Teacher Read Aloud with Flag and Tag

Why: The teacher reads aloud to model fluent reading. The  

         Flag  and Tag strategy engages students with text and   

         allows for self-monitoring of comprehension.

How: After choosing a section of text, the teacher reads aloud 

        from an overhead as the students follow along and Flag

        and Tag any “road blocks”.

3.    What: Group Discussion

Why: The teacher will clarify difficult words and concepts (road

         blocks).

How: The teacher records, defines, and explains road blocks

         submitted by the students.

 

What: Choral Read

Why: The students will develop fluency as the text is reread.

How: All students read out loud as the teacher rereads the

text.

4.    What: Partner Read

Why: The students will develop fluency and gain meaning as

         the text is reread.

How: Partners take turns rereading the text and summarizing 

         important points.

Culminating

6. What: Magnet Summary

    Why: The teacher will assess students’ comprehension.

     How: Students choose five Flag and Tag words/concepts and    

     write a summary of the text using the chosen words/concepts.
