The front door opens everyday at 7:30.  Please do not drop your child off on the porch before that time as we have no on-duty supervision until 7:30.

Who do I call concerning bus issues?

For any questions regarding bus transportation, please call Mrs. Thorson at extension 307.

Who do I call with questions concerning my child's lunch account?

You must call the lunchroom at 725-2455.  The front office cannot answer any questions regarding lunch accounts.

What is the best way to contact my child's teacher?

All of our teachers send home weekly newsletters.  This has the upcoming information that you may need, and should also have their preferred form of communication listed.  You may check their website for their email address.  If you call the front office, a message will be taken or you will be transferred to voice mail for the teacher to receive during her planning time.

Who can I call for information concerning the 3 year old classes?

Davina Mann is the Coordinator for this program.  You may speak to her or speak to Teresa in the front office.

How can I get the password for STI Home?

This information can only be given to the parent or guardian and only by coming to the office between the hours of 8:00 and 2:00.  We're sorry, but we cannot give out this information on the phone.

May I walk in and get my child instead of waiting in the car rider line?

Any child who is a car rider will need to wait for the car line.  Students will not be dismissed to walk with parents or older children from the gym to a car.  Please do not walk up to the gym and ask for your child.  If you come to the front office, you must sign them our and wait in the office.

What time is considered a half day for attendance purposes?

Students must be here until 11:15 in order to count as a full day.

How many days does a parent have to return an excuse?

A parent has three school days to send in excuses.  After this, the absence will be marked unexcused.

Should a parent call the school when his/her child is going to be absent more than a couple of days?

It is helpful to call the school but not required.  If your child is absent, we may call and check on him/her because we care concerned about your child.  Please note that just because you called or we called you does not mean you do not have to send in a written note.  A written excuse is still required.

Why doesn't the school remind the parents when they forget to send in a written note?

It is the parent's responsibility to send a note.  Please see the Code of Conduct.  Quite frankly, we do send out reminders on teacher's weekly calendars, the principal's monthly menu and many other types of correspondences.  We simply do not have the time to call individuals.  Most teachers ask students on a daily basis for excuses.

Is it okay to have the doctor's office fax in excuses?

Yes.  However, the school will not call you when we do not receive an excuse.  It is the parent's responsibility to make sure the school receives the note.  The fax number to the school is 725-2979.

Is a family emergency automatically excused?

This falls under prior permission by the principal at the request of the parent/guardian.  Typically, Dr. Donna will excuse a death or terminal illness of extended family members or the birth of a sibling.  However, the written note most state this information or the parents must call the office and let Dr. Donna know this information.  The school will not call the parent and ask them to explain what the emergency was.

Is a family vacation considered excused?

This also falls under prior permission.  Business trips, family vacations, and field trips with other grade levels or schools have not been given prior permission.

What happens if I have an unexcused absence?

You will receive a letter upon your first unexcused absence.  This letter is a form letter that all Madison County Schools have been asked to send to support new attendance guidelines passed by the Alabama State Department of Education.  After you sign the letter, it is placed in your child's records.  After 5 unexcused absences, you will be required to attend a meeting with the truancy officer for Madison County Schools.  If you feel you receive a letter in error, please call the school, and we will be glad to discuss the specifics of your situation.

How many unexcused absences are allowed?

You will receive a letter with the first unexcused absence.  After 5 unexcused absences, you will be required to attend an information meeting with the truancy officer with Madison County Schools.  She may then choose to file a petition with the court after 7 unexcused absences.

If my child is suspended from the bus and the parent cannot provide transportation, is this excused?

No, that is counted unexcused.  Riding the school bus is not a guaranteed right.  If a child cannot behave and endangers the safety of others, he/she will not be allowed to ride.  This does not have anything to do with school attendance.  The parents is still required to make sure the child attends school.

How many personal illnesses are allowed?

A student is allowed 10 illnesses with a note from a parent.  After the 10th absence for illness, all absences must have a doctor's excuse.

What should I do if my child arrives after 7:45?

Please sign your child in after 7:45.  Your child must receive a tardy pass from the office in order for their absence from homeroom to be changed to a tardy.  The teachers try to ask for the tardy passes, but if your child does not stop and get one, his/her absences will likely not be changed to tardy.  This could lead to an unexcused absence letter being sent in error.  If you receive a letter you feel may be because of a tardy, please call the office and we will correct this.  It is important that an adult sign the child in to help avoid this.

Does the school have a need for volunteers?

Absolutely!!  We often have work from the teachers that you may help us with or copying that needs to be done for the front office.  Please call Teresa in the front office to see what our needs are at the current time.
