She is married to Alex Hughes, who is the principal at Central School. She has one daughter, Grace Alexandria. She comes from a long line of educators. Her parents, Jim and Carol Cooper, were teachers and administrators. Her grandparents were teachers, coaches, and administrators. She enjoys being part of the lives of her students. She hopes that they learn something they can use later on in life in her classes.

Mrs. Hughes grew up in Taft, Tennessee. She lived on her grandparents' farm. Even though she lived in Tennessee, she went to school at Madison Cross Roads with her mother from first grade to eighth grade. Then, she went to Blanche Jr. High for the ninth grade with her dad. She graduated from Lincoln County High School.

Mrs. Hughes received her Bachelor's degree in 1994 from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In 1998 received her Master's degree from Alabama A&M. and her Education Specialist Degree from Tennessee State University in May 2004.
