Scholarship Information

  One of the best sources for scholarship and financial aid information is the college you plan to attend.  The college or university will award scholarships; many foundations or other organizations also fund scholarships for students at a particular institution.  Be sure to check the college catalog, the Admissions Office, the Financial Aid Office, and the Department in which you plan to study.  There is an abundance of scholarship information available on the web – please see our list of suggested websites.

         
Below are listed several other scholarships that are typically offered throughout the year.



Area Scholarships

Alabama Association of School Office Personnel (AASOP) typically awards several $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a degree from the college of business or K-12 education.  The scholarships are awarded based on scholastic record and financial need.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office mid-winter, with a deadline typically in March.

 Alabama Bankers Association Young Bankers Section sponsors an Essay Scholarship competition.  The top entry is usually awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Applications will be available online at www.alabamabankers.org, and are typically due March 1.


Alabama Conservation District Employees Association Scholarships typically award $500 scholarships to six students who are active in student affairs and/or show leadership abilities.  Applications must also show financial need.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in mid-winter, with a deadline typically in early March.


Alabama Farm Bureau Scholarship for Agriculture Students.  The Alabama Farm Bureau Federation awards a $500 Agriculture scholarship.  Eligibility criteria include:  high school senior planning to attend a university within the state of Alabama; family is a current member of The Alabama Farm Bureau Federation; student must have maintained a 2.5 GPA in high school; and student must plan to pursue a degree somehow related to the field of agriculture.  Applications are typically due in early May of senior year.


 Alabama Homebuilders Foundation Scholarship for students planning to study building-related field.  Applications are available online at:  www.ahbfoundation.org.  Deadline to apply is typically March 15.


Alabama Law Foundation, Inc., Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund.  Established by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar in 1992 to provide scholarships for college and technical school to children who have had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job accident.  Scholarships typically range from $500 to $3,000.  Download an application from the foundation’s web site at www.alfinc.org.  Entry deadline is typically May 1 of senior year.


Alabama Hospice Organization High School Senior Essay Contest.  AHO’s “Hospice Care: The Journey Home” essay competition began in 1997 with the objective of educating Alabama’s young people and promoting community awareness about end-of-life care for terminally ill patients.  Entry is available to all high school seniors in the state.  Applicant should include a biographical page about himself or herself, including but not limited to address, telephone number, and name of high school attending, and any civic or community projects in which he or she participates.  Awards include $250 to $2,000 scholarships.  Entry deadline is typically October.


American Cancer Society Mid-South Division has established a college scholarship program to give young cancer survivors the opportunity to pursue a degree.  Established in 2000, the scholarship program is open to students who have had a cancer diagnosis before age 21 and who have a GPA of at lest 2.5.  To be eligible, students must be accepted to an accredited two- or four-year university or community college.  Consideration will be given to students pursuing an education in regionally accredited vocational technical schools.  Awards are based on a combination of financial need, scholarship, leadership, and community service.  Applications are typically due in April of senior year.

 Alpha Delta Kappa, Beta Psi Education Scholarship program assists a student in the pursuit of a college degree in the field of education.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office mid-winter, with a deadline typically in mid-March.


Birmingham-Southern College, Huntsville Alumni Chapter, Honors Scholarship.  The chapter’s nominees will compete for scholarships up to full tuition and an $11,000 stipend.  The chapter’s first-place nominee will automatically receive a minimum $6,000 scholarship.  The minimum selection criteria are:  ACT composite of 29 or better and/or SAT of 1280 or better; GPA of 3.5 or better on academic subjects; students must be involved in the community and should have held at least three leadership positions; students should be interested in attending Birmingham-Southern College.  Applications are typically accepted in October of senior year.


100 Black Men of America, Greater Huntsville Chapter offers scholarships based on grades, essay, SAT/ACT scores, and recommendations.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office mid-winter, with a typical due date of early March.


Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program:  Awards $1,500 scholarships to approximately 15 high school graduates in each of Alabama’s seven US congressional districts.  Each public or private high school may nominate up to three students.  Criteria for selection are the ACT or SAT scores if available; overall grade point average (GPA); and the GPA in college preparatory subjects. Entry deadline is typically March of senior year.


John L. Cashin, Sr. Scholarship, Xi Omicron Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.  These scholarships are awarded to freshmen entering college for the first time.  Eligibility criteria:  must be citizen of the United States of America; must complete all parts of the application; must score no less than 15 on the ACT or equivalent score on the SAT; must have no less than a B average upon graduation; must provide three letters of recommendation from individuals who have no family ties and a recommendation from the school counselor, all of which should be mailed under separate cover by the recommender.   Need:  limited or no financial support from the family; limited or no educational scholarship commitments; limited or no educational grant commitments; limited or no work study commitments.


Daughters of the American Revolution scholarships:

Alabama Society DAR scholarships are open to Alabama residents who are graduating seniors of an accredited high school.  The scholarships must be used at an Alabama college or university or under the Common Market proviso if chosen curriculum is not offered in Alabama.  Applications for the Alabama Society DAR scholarships are to be sent to the State Chairman:  Ms. Roberta Haden Greene, 808 Lakeshore Ave., Opelika, AL  36801National Society DAR scholarships are for students who will be majoring in American History.  These are first judged on the state level and the two state winners are then judged on a Division level and finally on a National level.  Students must be an American citizen and attending an accredited college or university in the United States.  Applications go to Gale M. Fuller, Scholarship Chairman, Huntsville Chapter, NSDAR, 1303 Briar Hollow Trail, Huntsville, AL  35802-3803.  Deadline for both scholarship applications is February 1.


DAR Good Citizens Program and Scholarship is designed to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  Scholarship applicants must have been awarded the school’s Good Citizen Award.  The scholarship contest consists of two parts:  Part I (personal) consists of several questions asking the student to describe how he/she has tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen.  This part may be completed at home and is to be submitted with a copy of official transcript and two letters of recommendation.  Part II (essay) is to be administered under the supervision of a faculty or DAR member.  DAR Good Citizens who enter the Scholarship Contest are eligible for awards beyond the chapter level.  Each state winner receives a cash award in the amount of at least $250 (or a savings bond).  The national winner will be invited to Washington, DC, to attend DAR Continental Congress and be awarded a $3,000 scholarship.  The national second place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the third place winner will receive a $750 scholarship.  The remaining 6 geographical division winners will each receive a cash award of $500.  Completed entry is typically due in October.


Elks Huntsville Lodge No. 1648 Scholarship Competition awards scholarships valued at $1,000.  Applications are judged on transcripts, ACT/SAT scores, leadership and extra curricular activities, honors/awards, community service, essay, parental financial statement, and letters of recommendation.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office mid-winter, with a deadline of late January.


Elks National Foundation Scholarship Program for high school seniors.  Boys and girls will compete separately for identical awards.  Financial need, leadership and scholarship are the criteria by which applicants will be judged.  Students of outstanding merit have the best chance to win.  Experience indicates that students with scholarship ratings of 90% or better, a relative standing in the upper 10% of their class, and who have exhibited leadership abilities, generally qualify in the group given final consideration.  Awards have ranged from $1,000 to $7,500.


Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3263 offers several $1,000 non-renewable need-based scholarships.  Criteria for selection:  financial need, 2.5 GPA minimum, ACT score of 18 or better/or equal SAT, leadership and community service.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office mid-winter with a deadline of mid-April.


Hunter Daniel Mitchell Memorial Scholarship was created in the memory of Hunter Daniel Mitchell, the son of Dan and Barbara Mitchell.  A scholarship of $1,000 is typically awarded to a graduating MCHS senior who also attended Central School who wishes to continue their education at a college or trade school.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in late winter with a deadline typically in early April.


J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding community service and/or have provided assistance to family members.  Priority is also given to students who need financial assistance and who are the first in their families to attend college.  Applicants should have a C+ GPA; no minimum ACT score is required.  The scholarship is a full four-year scholarship to a four-year accredited institution in Alabama that offers a bachelors degree.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in late fall with a deadline of mid January.


John Hunt Pilot Club scholarship to provide financial aid to a graduating high school senior.  Applicants must plan to be a full time student at a post-secondary school in the State of Alabama, and must maintain at least a “B” GPA.


Madison County Alumni Association has established a $1,000 scholarship for seniors at Madison County High School who plan to enter post-high school study either in a trade school, technical school, junior college, or four-year college/university.  Deadline is typically March of senior year.


Madison County Homemakers for Family and Community Education scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors in Madison County and is based on need and merit.  The award amount is typically $250.  Applications are typically available in fall and due by end of March in senior year.


Madison County Junior Miss:  Open to high school senior girls.  Criteria for selection includes scholastics, panel evaluation, fitness, poise, and talent.  Awards include tuition scholarships (as much as $5,000) and cash (as much as $600).  Application deadline is typically September of the senior year.  Point of contact:  Ms. Kim Robbins, 256-233-6279.  Website:  http://www.ajm.org.  Email:  jrobbins@hiwaay.net.


North Alabama Educators Credit Union usually offers a $1,500 scholarship.  To be eligible to apply, high school seniors must have a B average or higher, and must plan to enter one of the following colleges:  Calhoun Community College, Faulkner University, JF Drake Technical College, or Virginia College.  Financial need may be a consideration.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in mid-winter, with a deadline of early April.


Padgett Business Services Scholarship Program.  Offers $500 scholarship to a graduating senior whose parent or guardian owns and operates a small business.  Eligibility:  applicant must be a dependent of a small business owner who employs fewer than 20 individuals, owns at least 10% of the stock or capital in the business, and is active in the day-to-day operations of the organization.   Applicant must be a graduating high school senior planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.  Evaluation criteria also include grades, test scores, and a 100-word essay describing his or her education and career plans.  Completed applications must be postmarked and mailed to Padgett Business services headquarters by March 1.  Winners are announced in May.  Redstone Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals usually awards two scholarships in the amount of $750 to students majoring in the field of business.  Applications will be online at www.geocities.com/iaaprsa/current.htm, with a March deadline.


Rocket City Tall Club holds an award competition for a $1,000 Kae Sumner Einfeldt Scholarship Award from the Tall Clubs International and a $400 scholarship Daniel Lundgren Scholarship Award given locally.  Height requirements, in stocking feet, are at least 5’10” for women and 6’2” for men.  Other criteria include academics, community and school activities, personal achievement, essay, and recommendations.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in mid-winter with a deadline typically in March.


Rotaryann Memorial Scholarship (typically from $500 to $1,000) is for use by a graduating high school senior woman planning to attend a college or university in Alabama.  She must be of good moral character, exhibiting leadership and excelling in scholarship, and have a genuine need for the scholarship.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in mid-winter with a deadline in March.


Shelby Pleasants Memorial Scholarship for students planning to attend the University of Alabama.  This scholarship awards $400 and is open to any graduating senior at Madison County High School and Huntsville High School who plans to enroll at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  Application due date is typically March of senior year.

Soroptimist International of Huntsville, Alabama, Youth Citizenship Award.  Awards range from $500 to $1,500.  Criteria for selection:  These awards recognize young people for their outstanding contributions to home, school, community, country and the world.  They are not awarded for scholastic achievement, but rather for the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to improving the quality of life for others.  Criteria:  applicant must be a graduating high school student and must not have reached his/her 21st birthday prior to July 1 of that year; applicant demonstrates considerable commitment to family life; applicant initiates or is involved in student activities that benefit the school and its students; applicant initiates or is involved in activities serving the immediate community and society at large. Entry deadline is typically December of senior year.


Timothy Briggs Scholarship is usually offered by the North Alabama Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.  This scholarship is awarded to minority high school seniors in the North Alabama area meeting the following criteria:  Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above, evidence of community service and leadership ability; two letters of recommendation.  Finalists will also undergo an interview.  Applications are usually available in the Guidance Office in late fall, with an early January deadline.


ohn Walsh Scholarship.  This scholarship was established to assist graduates of Madison County High School in continuing their education through college.  John Walsh was a teacher at Madison County High School and a long-time member of the Gurley, Alabama, community.  Scholarships will be awarded for $1,000 per academic year.   Recipients of the John Walsh Scholarship may renew their scholarship to receive up to a total of $4,000 over their four years in college.  The recipient is selected based upon the following:  GPA, completed application form with essay, need, resume, 3 letters of recommendation, ACT/SAT score.  Applications are typically due in April of senior year when funds are available.


E.H. Wilbourn Scholarship is sponsored by the Huntsville/Madison County Retired Teachers Association.  This scholarship of $500 of tuition assistance per year for four years will be awarded to a high school senior who plans to pursue a career in education.  Applications are typically due May 1 of senior year.



US Armed Forces Scholarships and Tuition Assistance

 Web sites:  www.myfuture.com and www.militarycareers.com

 Montgomery GI Bill:  While serving on active duty in any branch of the Armed Forces, you contribute $100 a month for 12 months to be able to receive up to $19,296 for college expenses.  The Reserve and National Guard give you an opportunity to earn up to $9,180 in total benefits, with no initial contribution.  You can use these benefits while either a full-time or part-time student.  Call 1-800-893-LEAD or your local recruiter.


ROTC Scholarships:  The Armed Forces offer ROTC programs at most major colleges and universities where you can apply for the ROTC program of your choice.  Army:  1-800-USA-ROTC; Navy/Marine Corps:  1-800-USA-NAVY; or Air Force:  1-800-522-0033, ext. 2091.

US Armed Forces College Funds and Programs:  The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard College Funds, when combined with the Montgomery GI Bill (see above), can offer you up to $50,000 in cash for college.  1-800-USA-ARMY; 1-800-USA-NAVY; 1-800-423-USAF; 1-800-MARINES, or 1-800-424-8883.


Armed Forces Service Academy Appointments:  The Armed Forces Service Academies – including the US Military Academy at West Point, US Naval Academy, US Air Force Academy, and US Coast Guard Academy, offer superior educational opportunities with full scholarships leading to an officer commission.  All appointments to the academies are awarded on a competitive basis.  1-800-893-LEAD.

Best Buy “Dollars for Scholars” scholarship for students who have made extraordinary volunteer contributions to their communities.  To be eligible, students must live within 100 miles of a Best Buy store and be enrolled or plan to enroll full-time at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in an undergraduate program of study.  Applicants will be screened first on their level of volunteer community service over the pat four years.  Finalists will be selected by the level of volunteer service and the degree of its impact on the applicant’s life, as well as the student’s academic achievement, work experience, school activities, statement of goals, and an outside appraisal.  Applications are typically due in mid March of senior year.


Burger King Scholars Foundation offers scholarships of $1,000.  To meet eligibility requirements for this scholarship award, applicants must: maintain a GPA of 2.5 to 3.5 throughout high school; work an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (part-time year-round); participate in community service and/or co-curricular activities; receive a written recommendation from the school and the student’s employer; and demonstrate financial need.  Madison County High School may typically nominate one senior for this scholarship.  Watch for information from the counselor’s office in fall of senior year.


Coca-Cola Scholars Program awards 250 scholarships nationwide each year.  These scholarships range from $4,000 to $20,000.  A successful candidate must have a minimum 3.0 GPA at end of junior year; graduate in the current academic year; demonstrate (1) leadership in school, civic and other extracurricular activities; (2) academic achievement; and (3) motivation to serve and succeed in all endeavors.  Initial application deadline is typically October 31 of senior year.  www.thecoca-colacompany.com, or email scholars@na.ko.com.


FFA Scholarships are offered by the national FFA as well as many companies and organizations.  Information and applications are available at www.ffa.org, with a deadline usually in mid-February.


McDonald’s offers scholarships to employees.  To be eligible, students must be an hourly employee of McDonald’s restaurant, must have been employed for at least 4 months, and work a minimum of 15 hours per week.  Applications are typically available from the restaurant manager in January/February of senior year.


Mensa Foundation Scholarships vary from $300 to $1,000.  Awards are based on an essay of no more than 550 words that describes the applicant’s career, vocational, or academic goals.  It is NOT necessary that the applicant be a member of Mensa.  Applications are typically available online at www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships, with a deadline in mid January.


Outstanding Students of America scholarship recognizes students who participate in community and school activities and maintain an above-average GPA.  Applications are available online at www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com. Deadline to apply is typically  mid-October.


Prudential Spirit of Community Awards created in 1995 to recognize students who have demonstrated exemplary community service.  These awards are presented annually on the local, state, and national level. State Honorees receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense paid trip with a parent to Washington, DC, in May; National Honorees receive additional $5,000 awards, engraved gold medallions, and crystal trophies for their schools or organizations.  Application deadline is October 31.


 Sam Walton Community Scholarship is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the student’s first year of undergraduate study.  To qualify the student must not be a Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., or SAM’S Club Associate, or the child or legal dependent of an associate.  Applications are usually available online through mid January.  www.walmartfoundation.org.  The access code SWCS must be used to access this application process.


The Schering/Key Corporation annual Will to Win Asthma Athlete Scholarship Program is for high school scholar-athletes with asthma.  Grants of $10,000, $5,000 and $1,000 in college scholarships will be awarded to 10 deserving high school seniors.   Criteria for eligibility also includes achievement of excellence in both competitive sports and high school academics; leadership qualities; and notable extracurricular activities and accomplishments.  Applications deadline is typically April of senior year.


UAW Labor Essay Contest offers scholarships from $400 to $1,000.  This contest is open to students scheduled to graduate from Alabama or Mississippi high schools and planning to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student beginning fall after graduation.  Deadline is typically March of senior year.

General Announcements

  • No Yearbook Staff Meeting this week.
  • Students:  Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science – called GEMS --  is a summer program for students in 8th to 12th grade.  The program is hosted at Redstone Arsenal and will be held during June and July.  The program is designed to broaden students’ interest in science, math and engineering.  Details and application information is available in the Guidance Office.
  • Extra yearbooks from 2007-08 may be purchased for $35.  See Ms. Holmes during break to purchase.  Make checks payable to MCHS.
  • Graduation Exam results are in - see Dr. Gulbro.
  • Seniors may pick up their Senior Shirts after school in Room 160.
  • Students:  The SEAP program is sponsored by the Department of Defense and offers science and engineering apprenticeship opportunities to outstanding students interested in science and engineering.  Participants must be willing to spend 8 to 12 continuous weeks in the apprentice program during the summer.  Students may apply online at www.usaeop.com.  Deadline is January 30.  For more information please see Dr Gulbro.
  • Students:  If you earned As and Bs in all subjects on your first semester report card, you are eligible to participate in the Delta Sigma Theta High School Honors Convocation.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Applications and transcripts must be postmarked by February 17.
  • Seniors:  If you plan to attend Auburn University and have at least a 24 ACT and a 3.5 GPA, please see Dr. Gulbro about the Auburn Achievement and the Auburn Leadership scholarships.
