ORLANDO MORNING SESSION BRINGS A REPEAT SUPERSTAR FROM TAMPA AND AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN THAT COULD BE THE NEXT 5 STAR SUPERSTAR IN ANDRE HARRIS. NUC SOUTHEAST, THUNDER FIELD @ CITRUS BOWL, ORLANDO, FL, 5/13/07

Two defensive backs shined, but the MVP went to sophomore Darian Sharpe of Buckhorn High School in Alabama. Sharpe, 5-foot-8 ½ and 173-pounds, showed great cover skills during the 1-on-1’s and had a 32.5-inch vertical, 4.69 40, 8’2” broad, and had 21 reps at 150-pounds.

Bucks don't stop in final seconds
Saturday, September 08, 2007From staff reportsHuntsville Times Buckhorn edges Bob Jones with late return for TD NEW MARKET - Buckhorn and Bob Jones opened their Class 6A, Region 8 football schedule in style Friday night. The visiting Patriots, trailing as the game clock ran out, drove 80 yards to what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown with 21 seconds left. But in a remarkable turn of events, Jordan Tippit of host Buckhorn returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards to lift the Bucks to a thrilling 24-21 victory. "I was just looking to find a hole," Tippit said. "I hoped everyone would get helmet on helmet. I knew if I could get to the outside I could take it to the house." Tippit dropped the kickoff briefly. He cut to the left, barely stayed inbounds, and galloped to the end zone. "They have a very explosive team," Buckhorn coach Michael Jackson said. "We knew we had to take advantage of our young kids and what they could do." The strategy was to control the ball and run the clock. It was noticeable in the first half when the wishbone-oriented Bucks had the ball for 18:41 of the 24 minutes. Buckhorn used the first 9:04 of play in driving from its 26-yard line, taking 14 plays, and getting a 30-yard field goal from Chance Wilson. It became 10-0 in the second quarter when quarterback Darien Sharp found Meco Miller in the flats and he scooted 55 yards for the score. Bob Jones answered when quarterback Jordan Busing found Arthur Brackett over the middle for a 21-yard score. Cody Ross kicked the first of his three extra points. The teams headed for intermission with Buckhorn ahead 10-7.Bob Jones went up 14-10 early in the third quarter as Brackett hit Tyson Parker on a reverse play for a 40-yard touchdown. Buckhorn answered with 11:44 remaining when Sharp fought off a rush and passed to Cameron Traylor, who cut inside and scored on a 59-yard touchdown play. Now ahead 17-14, the Bucks appeared closer to victory when Terrell Corbitt, Casey Catron and Richard Harris stuffed Trai Ragland of Bob Jones on a fourth-and-one gamble from the Patriot 41. Buckhorn ran time down to 3:18 with a drive which would result in a missed field goal. Bob Jones then put on the gutsy 80-yard drive in 13 plays with Busing scoring on an option keeper from the 3. It was 21-17 Patriots, but only until Tippit got his chance."Buckhorn made more plays than we did," Bob Jones coach Shannon Brown said. "Nothing magical." Miller ran 27 times for 83 yards for Buckhorn (1-1, 1-0). Busing carried 12 times for 72 yards for Bob Jones (1-1, 0-1), while Parker caught four passes for 77 yards. Bucks rout Hazel Green
HAZEL GREEN – Buckhorn High School gets to keep the Cotton Classic trophy for another year. Showing no signs of a letdown after last week’s comeback win over Bob Jones, the Bucks routed rival Hazel Green 45-12 on Friday night. Buckhorn improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in Class 6A, Region 8. “The key to the game was us coming out and executing our game plan well,” Bucks coach Michael Jackson said. “And we had some guys step up and make the plays, that’s what got us up.” Sophomore running back Marquis Smith had 11 carries for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Meco Miller had 12 carries for 104 yards and one touchdown. Junior quarterback Darian Sharp completed 5-of-8 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another TD. “Our mind-set was to come out with another win, go 2-0 in the region,” Smith said. “We owe it all to the O-line tonight. We just did what we had to do and closed it out.” Miller also complimented the offensive line. “We just hit the holes hard all night,” he said. Blocking was the key, echoed Sharp. “They blocked good, we ran good,” he said. Buckhorn led 38-6 at halftime and the starting offense played only one series in the third quarter. Smith capped that five-play, 72-yard drive with a 44-yard touchdown run. The Bucks amassed 451 yards of total offense, including 364 rushing. Jackson credited his offensive line of center Jonah Fretwell, right guard Justin Goodrich, left guard Shane Latham, left tackle Jake Kilgore and right tackle Matt Rogers. Chance Wilson kicked a 38-yard field goal and made all six extra points. Hazel Green (0-3, 0-2) scored on a 23-yard pass to Corey Burger from Howard Anderson and a 3-yard run by Brandon Branner. “We just went up against a better team,” Trojans coach Alvin Palmer said. “Buckhorn’s an outstanding football team. We just don’t have as many athletes as they do. Coach Jackson and his staff do an outstanding job on and off the field and in the weight room. And eventually we’re going to have to get to that point where we can do some of those same things.”

Whole Lot of Bucks
Buckhorn defense, Miller's running too much for Grissom. Buckhorn ran the ball, pitched a shutout and got mostly sound play from its special teams. It all overwhelmed host Grissom.Tailback Meco Miller led a ground game that controlled the action and the Bucks remained unscathed in Class 6A, Region 8 action Friday night with a sound 31-0 blanking of the Tigers at Milton Frank Stadium. Buckhorn moved to 3-1 overall and remained in a three-way tie atop the region standings at 3-0. Grissom fell to 1-3, 0-3. Bucks coach Michael Jackson said his game ball was going to the team's defensive assistants - coordinator Matt Putnam, Chris Hancock (ends), Ronald Wilson (line), Greg Polson (linebacker) and Patrick Harris (outside linebackers). "Our kids went out and executed well,'' Jackson said. "On defense, our kids executed extremely well. Our defensive coaches did a good job getting our kids ready.'' Grissom managed just 42 yards on 30 rushes and passed for just 84 on 11-of-29 completions with one interception. Tigers quarterbacks were hurt by five dropped passes. Meanwhile, Miller had 138 yards on 17 carries to lead a Buckhorn attack that had 266 yards on 42 rushes. The Bucks were 4-of-8 passing for 68 yards with one interception. "Buckhorn played well,'' Grissom coach Ronny Massey said, "and we just sat there and watched them." Teams take a break from region play for one week. After playing Lee next week, Buckhorn faces Sparkman, Huntsville, Florence and Austin. "We're fixing to compete with the top teams in our region,'' Jackson said. "We're excited about the opportunity, but we've got to stay focused and get better. This is the toughest part of our schedule.'' Grissom tries to rebound against Johnson this week before re-entering region action.

Bucks Romp Generals
Bucks Romp Generals Posted by Skip Vaughn on September 29, 2007 12:53 a.m. NEW MARKET – Heading into region competition, Buckhorn High football coach Michael Jackson wanted his team to stay sharp in Friday’s homecoming game against Lee. The Bucks were sharp from the start.Buckhorn beat Lee 44-7 after leading 31-0 at halftime. The Bucks (4-1) used their reserves in the second half. “Our seniors did a great job this week keeping everybody focused, knowing we’ve got some big region games coming up,” Jackson said. “And our seniors showed great maturity all week long. We knew it was important for us to come out and execute, getting us ready for the rest of our region games. “I was pleased with the intensity and the execution early in the game. And some of our young kids played extremely hard.” Marquis Smith had five carries for 23 yards and two touchdowns. Meco Miller had seven carries for 66 yards and a touchdown plus four catches for 19 yards. Quarterback Darian Sharp completed 10-of-12 passes for 123 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Traylor. Chance Wilson kicked a 37-yard field goal and was 4-for-4 on extra points. And all that happened before halftime.Wesley Thompson added touchdown runs of 16 and 1 yards in the third quarter. “Tonight we knew they wanted to come in and take it away from us,” said Smith, a sophomore running back. “But tonight was a big night for us. It was homecoming. We knew what we wanted to do, and we just got the job done.” Said Miller, a junior running back: “Next week is going to be rough for us. We’ve got region play against Sparkman. It’s going to be a hard week of practice.” In the first half, Buckhorn’s defensive starters limited Lee (1-4) to two first downs and 32 total yards. The junior varsity offense went in with three minutes left in the second quarter. The starting defense played to the first series of the third quarter. The Generals scored on quarterback Raymond Russell’s 10-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Odoms with 3:42 left in the game, capping a six-play, 60-yard drive. “We played obviously a very good football team,” Lee coach Ricky Daniel said. “We stepped up at times. We’ve got to regroup. We’ve got a big rivalry game next week against Butler. And that’s what we’ve got to focus on, getting ready for Butler.”

Buckhorn holds on for win.
Posted by John Ferry on October 06, 2007 1:25 a.m. NEW MARKET – Buckhorn coach Michael Jackson said the difference in Friday night’s battle with Sparkman came down to one thing. Perseverance. The Bucks blew a two-touchdown lead, regained the advantage midway of the third quarter, then put Sparkman away on a Jordan Tippit interception with two minutes remaining. Buckhorn claimed a 21-14 victory, its fifth straight win since an opening-game loss to North Jackson. The Bucks – along with Huntsville – are 4-0 in Class 6A, Region 8. Sparkman fell to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the region.Meco Miller ran 23 times for 97 yards and scored once for Buckhorn. Quarterback Darian Sharp threw just seven times but hit on five of them, two for touchdowns. “We kept on fighting,” Miller said. “We’ve been working hard.”Quarterback Rob Weaver guided a Sparkman passing attack that gained 180 yards on 18-for-24 passing with one touchdown. However, he was intercepted twice. Weaver did not practiced all week because of an ankle injury.Sparkman’s loss was compunded by the loss of several players. Ben Ryce tore his ACL and MCL and is out for the year, lineman Chris Gardner has a fibula injury and back Bryant Williams aggravated an ankle injury. To say the least, these are frustrating times for Sparkman coach Roger Haynes.“We’re not very good,” he said. “We don’t have depth.” Haynes added his team did not play with emotion on defense.“Our guys are in another world. We made multiple mental mistakes.” Buckhorn drove 60 yards in eight plays after the opening kickoff. Miller went in from the 1 but the extra point was blocked. The next possession for the Bucks began at the Sparkman 43 following a short punt. On second down, Sharp found Cameron Traylor open for a 35-yard score, and when Sharp connected with Deondray Baker on a two-pointer, it was 14-0. For a while after that, momentum began to swing toward Sparkman. After stopping Buckhorn on fourth-and-two at the Senators 32, Sparkman drove to a touchdown in 11 plays. Weaver scored from the 1 and Michael Kitchens kicked the extra point. Sparkman received the second-half kickoff, and on the fourth play Weaver scrambled and found Williams open on a scoring play that covered 60 yards. Lex Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards to the Sparkman 48. Seven plays later, Sharp found Sloan Finnerty open on a corner route for a 31-yard touchdown. Sparkman reached Buckhorn territory twice in the fourth quarter. Weaver was sacked for a 12-yard loss to slow the first drive, and after the Senators got to the 30 on their final possession, Tippit closed the door with his interception.
