This two part series will utilize Lego Mindstorm Robotics Curriculum. The goals of this curriculum will help the student understand:
- Programming mobile robots
- Applying measurement and geometry to calculate robot navigation
- Path planning using both geometry and multiple sensor feedback
- Interpreting sensor feedback/calculating threshold values/understanding conditional statements
- Systems and systems analysis
- Experimental process
- Documenting and explaining the results of their testing
Goal Objectives for the Robotics- Apply the physics of translational motion, rotational motion, and gears to the construction of a robot to perform a task
- Program a robot equipped with light, sonar, rotation, and bump sensors to reliably perform simple physical tasks
- Employ variables, loops, conditionals, blocks, and subroutines in writing programs
- State a hypothesis about a robot's expected behavior
- Test the hypothesis with physical experiments
- Collect data about the behavior of a robot during an experiment
- Identify and fix problems with an improperly behaving robot
- Work productively as part of a team
- Plan, complete, test, and demonstrate a substantial creative project
- Write coherent and grammatically correct technical prose in standard American English
- Discuss the relationship between fictional and actual robots
- Analyze and understand different viewpoints about artificial intelligence
LEGO Mindstorm 18 Week Robotics Curriculum Overview
Intro To Robotics
Guided Research
Applied Engineering
Give students a set of guided experiences where they learn basic robotic principles Build on student robotic knowledge by immersing students in guided robotic research experience Apply engineering process to robotic problem solving, a gain a deeper understanding through 3 week research and design problems. Goal: learn measurement, ratios and proportions, conversion of units, basic programming, and mechanics using robotics as an organizer Goal: learn about research methodology, reinforce applied STEM understanding as well as deeper understanding of robotic systems Goal: learn appropriate engineering methodologies, systems, STEM Process: Students work pairs to complete LEGO Mindstorm robotic guided experiences. Process: Students work in teams to complete guided research experience. Teams are challenged to solve design problem. Process: Students work in teams to complete several guided research experiences. Students complete in multiple engineering design problems.
